Fragkokastelo Beach

Frangokastello (which means “castle of the Franks” because of the Venetian fortress that is built there) boasts some of the best beaches in the South-West of Crete. Fine golden sand and not overcrowded. The last is probably due to the fact that Frangokastello is a long way from the airports and mass-tourism of the North coast of the island.
The very clear water is shallow making it one of the safest beaches for children.

Type of beach: fine sand
Size of beach: there are three beaches. The western beach is around 600 m long, made of coarser sand and more open to the west winds. A number of tamarisk trees provide natural shade.
The best known beach is located below the Venetian fortress and around 250 m in length. The third beach to the East (called Orthi Ammos) is around 700 m long.
Crowds: the beach below the Venetian fortress can get a little busy. Orthi Ammos is generally very quiet.
Winds: occasional katabatic winds from the North affect the main beach. Sometimes wind from the West. On windy days the fine sand gets blown easily and can be bothersome.
Facilities
Sunbeds and umbrellas on the main beach
Safe for children: yes . The water is shallow and generally not many waves so it’s a fantastic beach for children.
Car parking: plenty of parking
Nude beach: the eastern end of Orthis Ammos is clothing optional.
